Absorption

Flue gas/exhaust air purification

Absorption

Describes the penetration of gases or liquids into a solid or liquid.

This includes various plant systems. The pollutants are adsorbed by a reactant or a solid such as calcium carbonate, activated carbon, etc. or a porous structure and are discharged and disposed of with the solid.

Fixed or moving bed systems

Fixed-bed absorbers contain a solid body that retains the pollutants flowing through. The filling in fixed-bed systems have to be replaced, disposed of and refilled with new material according to its capacity. Different materials and bodies are used as filling.

In moving bed absorbers, the filling moves by gravity through a zone through which flue gas flows. The pollutants contained in the flue gas are absorbed by the filling and the contaminated material is discharged from the bottom of the system.

Wet scrubber systems

There are two different scrubber systems: spraying scrubbers and column scrubbers. They differ not only in their design, but also in their cleaning performance.

Spraying scrubbers can generally cope with higher inlet temperatures and dust loads than column scrubbers, whereas the latter can achieve lower clean gas values at higher inlet concentrations.
